Talk to someone about your desire to go.
A trusted friend/mentor, and don’t forget your church leadership.
Pray for God’s wisdom and direction.
This could be one of the most life changing decisions you’ll make!
Prayer changes us. You can start praying for missions today. On our web site is a monthly prayer update. Why not down load it and begin to pray every day for missionaries around the world. Pray for your own involvement. Keep an open heart to God’s guiding and leading in your life.
Get involved in your local church.
You’ll need as much ministry and serving experience as you can get!
Strong involvement in your local church is a key way to prepare for future ministry so get involved in as much as you can. Serve the vision of your church, develop ministry skills such as evangelism, discipleship, leading cell groups etc. You will not change by crossing an ocean, so be the kind of person you want to be out there here first. Ask your leadership for ways you can serve your church. Sow into other people’s vision.
Relationship with God
Grow in your relationship with God. Be consistent in your daily devotion times. Begin praying globally. Check out the monthly prayer update on this web site. If you have not read the entire Bible do so. Take time every day to study the Word. Find someone you can meet with regularly to discuss what you are learning.
Learn about other cultures.
Read books, visit other communities in your neighbourhood, eat the food, talk to the people. We have the world on our doorstep.
A key principle in adapting cross culturally is, “not wrong, just different.” We have very set ways of doing things and viewing the world. People of other cultures have different sets of values. Explore these differences.
Get a bigger perspective.
Hang a world map somewhere you can see it and pray over it.
Pray for nations, pray for unreached peoples, pray for missionaries, pray for labourers to be sent into the ripe harvest fields. Become a student of the world by paying attention to world events. Use these as triggers to pray for the people of that nation or city.
Acquire more knowledge.
It might come in the form of a Uni degree, Bible College, or a missions preparation course like WHI/STINT offered by ACC World Missions.
STINT is for those going for 3 months to a year and World Harvest Institute is for those going long term.
Consider going on a short term missions trip. Use this opportunity well to find out about mission and your potential role in it
Contact your mission agency ASAP.
Develop a relationship as early as possible. You’ll benefit from the encouragement, sound advice, support, ideas and direction.
Australian Christian Churches World Missions would be happy to hear from you and talk to you about how to prepare for missions. Early contact with a mission agency is good as it enables a clear pathway to the field to be established from the start. This helps you know what is involved so you can be making wise choices now.
Go on a short term trip.
The exposure will help you understand ministry cross culturally.
